The Susita National Park allows visitors to see an ancient city from the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine Periods. Susita is located high on a cliff, overlooking Lake Kinneret, which is 3 kilometers to the west.
The source of the ancient city’s name is the Greek word “hippos”; so Susita can be understood to mean “The City of Horses.” Some believe that this is due to the horse-head-like shape of the hill; others believe that the city was founded by Greek cavalry soldiers in ancient times.
The ancient city was built on a mountain 350 meters above Lake Kinneret, south of the Ein Gev Riverbed. The city offers a stunning view of the lake and its surroundings.
